What counts as a position

A position goes on the tracker only when we can point to something the person said or did, with a link and a date. We use, in this order: their own official statements, campaign policy pages, recorded votes, bills they sponsored or cosponsored, and interviews where they're quoted by name. A news report can establish a position when it directly supports it.

We never treat silence as support or opposition, and we never infer a position from party membership. Saying healthcare should cost less is not support for single-payer. When a plank has several demands, each one is tracked separately, so someone who backs a stock-trading ban but has said nothing about adding House seats shows as partial, with the breakdown on their page.

Votes and bills are past records. They're shown with their date and what they did, never as a promise about the next Congress.

Leadership

For senators we track their position on Chuck Schumer staying on as Senate Democratic leader. For House members we track their position on Hakeem Jeffries becoming Speaker.

Senate Democrats choose their leader by secret ballot, and House Democrats pick their Speaker nominee the same way. Nobody outside the room can see those votes, so we only ever show what a member said they would do. The House floor vote for Speaker in January 2027 is a recorded roll call; once it happens, we'll add each member's recorded vote, labelled as one.

Each statement is labelled as a public statement on the record, a position reported by a news outlet, or a recorded vote. "Committed to oppose" means the person said it publicly; a position known only from reporting says "reported".

The roster

The roster is every Democrat, and every independent who caucuses with Democrats, whose seat in the 120th Congress (starting January 2027) is settled: senators whose seats weren't up in 2026, and winners of 2026 races that a news decision desk has called. A called race is marked projected until the state certifies it. Races that haven't been called are listed as pending and left out of every total, so the denominators always say how many people they cover.
